On the night of Saint John’s Eve, the city is enlivened with music, street games, guided tours and shows, and at midnight the traditional bonfire is lit. On the afternoon of June 24th, the Procession of the historical confraternities comes out of the Cathedral and parades with their life-size Crucifixes down to the Old Port where the blessing of the sea and the city takes place.

The largest show in town, The Genoa International Boat Show is the only one in the world including such a large marina - more than 400 boats hosted in 2006 up to 45 meters -, wide outdoor areas, and world-class areas like the ones under the tensile structure overlooking the sea, all in one single site. The Show currently features 8 kilometres of pathways on the sea, including jetties, bridges, quays, and elevated promenades, plus traditional routes.

Christmas and New Year in Genoa: a wonderful opportunity

Over the Christmas period the city comes alive with many initiatives, such as the market of Saint Porphyrius, craftsmen displaying their products in the streets and squares of the old town, the Christmas market, the Book Fair, the Luna Park, and not only that. Among the other attractions worth mentioning are the traditional lighting of the Christmas Tree donated by the Fiemme Valley, in the Trentino Alto Adige region; the “Confeugo” – an old tradition consisting in setting alight a large bay tree log, a gift to the Doge of the city by the People’s Representative – and New Year’s Day.
